In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll show you how to make Steve, Creeper, Alex, Skeleton, Pig, and Grass cupcakes that are perfect for any Minecraft party or gathering. Get ready to unleash your inner baker and bring the world of Minecraft to life one delicious square at a time!
Boxed Cake Mix for Minecraft Cupcakes
I used Betty Crocker Super Moist French Vanilla Cake Mix for these Cupcakes. It is yummy, fast and easy! However, if you prefer, you could make it from scratch.

Making Square Cupcakes
What you will need:
- cake batter (Betty Crocker Super Moist French Vanilla Cake Mix)
- toothpicks
- mixing bowls
- KitchenAid Hand Mixer
- spatula
- Contigo 24oz Water Bottle
- Wilton 16″ Piping Bags
- plastic food clips
- Wilton Square Cupcake Pan
- cupcake liners
- toothpicks
- cooling racks
Cupcake Batter
1. Make the cake batter. Follow the instructions on the back of the boxed cake mix. I always use milk instead of water.
Use Piping Bags
2. Open a 16″ piping bag and put inside a tall water bottle that is 24oz. Then pour batter into the piping bag. Remove the piping bag from the water bottle and apply a plastic food clip at the top of the piping bag.
3. Put regular round cupcake liners in the square cupcake pan. You will notice that they snap into place when you push them down.
4. Hold your piping bag of batter with the tip up, then cut a small opening at the tip.
5. Holding the piping bag over the cupcake liner, squeeze until your cupcake liners are 1/2 full.
Baking Cupcakes
6. Put the cupcakes in a preheated oven set to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. I know the box says 350, but I find reducing the temperature allows for the cupcakes to bake more evenly and come out with flatter tops. Bake the cupcakes for the minimum time shown as per the instructions on the back of the box. I checked my cupcakes at 13 minutes.
Baking Times for Boxed Cake Mix
7. Fully insert a toothpick into the centre of a cupcake to check if done. If the toothpick comes out clean, your cupcakes are done. If not, bake for another 2 minutes and recheck with a toothpick. Repeat until done.
8. Let cupcakes cool in pan for 10 minutes.
9. Remove cupcakes from pan and transfer to a cooling rack. Allow cupcakes to cool completely.
Frosting for Minecraft Cupcakes
Betty Crocker Creamy Deluxe French Vanilla is my go-to for frosting. I use this store-bought frosting for all of my cakes and cupcakes. It is yummy, works well, is consistent, and saves lots of time (making and cleaning up).

Color your Frosting
I always use Wilton’s icing colour. It is a gel consistency, and a little goes a long way.
What you will need:
- 2 containers of frosting (Betty Crocker Creamy Deluxe French Vanilla Frosting)
- Wilton 12″ piping bags
- Wilton Piping Tip #16 (Steve, Alex, Creeper, Skeleton & Pig)
- Wilton Piping Tip #233 (Grass)
- Regular Size Couplers (one for each color)
- Wilton Icing Colors Kit (includes Kelly Green, Pink, Brown, Black, Royal Blue, Golden Yellow, Copper and other colors)
- If making Alex, you will need Wilton Icing Color Orange in addition to the Wilton Icing Color Kit above.
Color your frosting according to Minecraft Characters below
Minecraft Pig (5 Colors)
Minecraft Steve (5 Colors)
Minecraft Alex (5 Colors)
Minecraft Skeleton (3 Colors)
Minecraft Creeper (2 Colors)
You will need a 12″ piping bag, filled with chilled frosting, and fitted with Wilton’s star piping tip #16 for each color required for your character cupcakes. If you need help making your piping bags, see How to Prepare a Piping Bag.
Minecraft Grass (1 Color)
You will need a 12″ piping bag, filled with chilled frosting, and fitted with Wilton piping tip #233 to make grass. If you need help making your piping bag, see How to Prepare a Piping Bag.
Piping your Minecraft Character
Start with making a cross imprint on your cupcake using a toothpick. Then pipe small stars on your cupcakes using the following character grids.
Minecraft Pig
Minecraft Steve
Minecraft Alex
Minecraft Skeleton
Minecraft Creeper
Star Technique
1. Hold the piping bag vertically straight over your cupcake with the tip slightly above it.
2. Squeeze the bag for about a second or two. NOTE: The longer you squeeze, the bigger the star will be.
3. Stop squeezing and pull up.
4. Go right beside your last star and do it all over again. Pay close attention to your spacing here, you want the icing to overlap slightly. It should be as close as necessary so that no cake shows between the stars. NOTE: To make similar-sized stars, keep your pressure and squeezing time as consistent as possible.

Piping your Minecraft Grass
1. Hold the piping bag vertically straight over the outer edge of your cupcake with the tip slightly above it.
2. Squeeze and gently pull upwards until strands are the desired length.
3. Stop squeezing and pull away. NOTE: For more natural-looking grass, mix up the direction when you pull away. So, pull away straight up, to the right or the left.
4. Go right beside your last cluster and do it all over again. Pay close attention to your spacing here. You want the icing to overlap slightly. It should be as close as necessary so that no cake is showing between the clusters.
5. Always start piping from outside to inside.

- When making the cake mix, use milk instead of water.
- Fill cupcake liners until 1/2 full.
- When opening a new Icing Color, put a pair of disposable food grade gloves on to prevent getting dye on your fingertips.
