Kids absolutely love decorating donuts! Plus, they will love the sweet treat when done. Most kids have never decorated a donut before. In fact, I had never either. But, there is a first for everything. Truly a Priceless Experience for the kids!
This activity takes approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on how many donuts each kid will decorate. Allow the icing to dry a little, before putting them in a box. That is unless the kids will eat the donuts right after decorating.
For Donut Decorating, you will need:
Paper Plates (for easy cleanup)
Donuts (order at least 2 weeks in advance from local donut bakery)
Chocolate and Vanilla Donut Icing (order with donuts)
Sprinkles
Small Spoons
Donuts & Icing
Order donuts and icing at least 2 weeks in advance from your local donut bakery. Make sure you have tasted the donuts before and love them! Our go to here is Tim Horton’s. We ordered chocolate dip donuts, with the chocolate and vanilla donut icing on the side. We picked them up the morning of the party so they were Fresh!
Note: Donut icing is not the same as the icing you use for cakes and cupcakes. It is more of a chocolate compound.
Donut Decorating Setup:
Have bowls of different kinds of sprinkles with small spoons on table.
Put the chocolate icing and vanilla icing into a couple of microwavable bowls. We did 4 bowls for 8 kids (2 chocolate and 2 vanilla).
Put a donut on a paper plate for each guest
Warm each bowl of icing in the microwave right before decorating begins. Approximately 20 seconds, depending on the microwave. Stir with a spoon. You want the icing to be more liquid so they can dip the donut in the icing.
Repeat Step 3, if needed.
Decorating the Donuts
Dip and turn the top of the donut in a bowl of warm icing OR spoon the warm icing onto the donut. I would not recommend dipping the same donut into different icing colours, as the colours will mix in the bowl.
Using a spoon, drizzle the other color over the first.
Add sprinkles
Now, they can either eat their yummy donut or you can put them aside to let the icing dry. Write their names on the top of the paper plates to avoid a mix-up.
Sending Donuts Home
If the donuts are being sent home with the kids, put the donut(s) in a small box. Each donut box should have the kids name on it to avoid a mix-up. I attached Donut Name Tags to the boxes before the party started to make things simple. You could use the Sweet Treats Tags, the Cute Cat Donut Tags or just write their names on the boxes.
